Montclair is a township located in Essex County, New Jersey, and is home to over 37,000 residents.  Montclair is located on the east side of the First Mountain of the Watchung Mountains. The name Montclair is taken from the French words mont clair, which means “clear mountain.” Montclair’s roots go back to 1868, when it became a township using portions of Bloomfield Township.  This was done in order to build a second railroad to Montclair.  In 1894 it became a town.  In 1980 a referendum was passed to change the name to Township of Montclair in order to take advantage of federal revenue sharing policies that gave more aid to municipalities on a per capita basis.

There are several streams that flow through Montclair.  In the center of town is Tony’s Brook.  Nishuane Brook is in the southeast, Wigwam Brook in the southwest, Pearl Brook in the northwest, and Yantacaw Brook.  All of the streams are in the Passaic River watershed.

Shopping & Dining

Montclair offers its residents a fine selection of places to shop and dine.  The Montclair Center offers a wide array of shops, services and dining choices.  Shopping includes fashionable stores such as Bobbi Brown-The Studio, That Little Black Dress and The V.I.P Boutique.  Services include Allure Hair Studio, Bank of America, and Smith Maran Architecture and Interiors, LLC, among many others.

And for dining, you can stay at the Montclair Center after you shop for a huge selection of great places to eat.  Restaurants include Ah’ Pizz for Italian food and pizza, Sushi Hana, Manny’s Diner, Euro Barbeque, and many others.

Living

What attracts many people to Montclair is its diversity in the some 38,000 people who call it home.  The town attracts many who work for major media outlets, such as The New York Times and Newsweek. Many Montclair residents commute to NYC for work. 

Montclair has 6 commercial zones.  The main commercial zone is Montclair Center, followed by Upper Montclair, Watchung Plaza, Walnut Street, South End, and Valley Road.

Parks & Recreation

There are a number of beautiful parks and preserves located in Montclair.  These parks include Mountainside Park, Edgemont Memorial Park,  Glenfield Park, Erie Park, Tuers Park, Graz Park, Canterbury Park, Watchung Park, Essex Park, Eagle Rock Reservation, Brookdale Park, Anderson Park, Yantacaw Brook Park, Nishuane Park,  the Bonsal Nature Reserve, Rand Park, the Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, and the Mills Reservation. Montclair residents also enjoy the 18 tennis courts, 4 skating rinks, and 3 public swimming pools.

Education

The over 6500 students of Montclair are served by Montclair Public Schools, which consists of 7 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 1 high school.  Elementary schools include Bradford Elementary School,  Charles H. Bullock Elementary School, Edgemont Montessori School, Hillside Elementary School,  Nishuane Elementary School, Northeast Elementary School, and Watchung Elementary School.  The three middle schools are Glenfield Middle School, Buzz Aldrin Middle School, Renaissance @ Rand.  The highs school is Montclair High School.

Montclair State University is also located in Montclair. There are also a number of private schools, including Immaculate Conception High School and Monclair Kimberly Acedemy.
