Montgomery Township is located in Somerset County in New Jersey and is home to over 22,000 residents. The township was incorporated in 1798 and is one of the state’s initial group of townships. The area had been inhabited by the Lenni Lenape Tribal groups. Settlement began in the early 18th century, with the building of churches, schools, general stores, and other trades. In the 1990s the population of Montgomery almost doubled, which made it the fastest growing township in Somerset County.
Residents of Montgomery have a number of great options for shopping in and around town. The Montgomery Shopping Center offers stores such as ShopRite, RiteAid, Kumon, and more, including several restaurants. The nearby Princeton Shopping Center is home to McCaffrey’s Food Market, Image Arts, and Betta Boutique.
As of 2010, Montgomery had a population of 22,254, with 7635 households. The median household income was $146,100.
Parks & Recreation
The Township of Montgomery has several lovely parks for residents to enjoy. Skillman Park is an open space area opened in 2015. A new trail, new fencing, signage, and landscaping were added to the park. Other parks include Bessie Grover Park, Cherry Hill Road Preserve, Hobler Park, Lubas Ball Fields, Montgomery Veterans Park, Skillman Park, Sourland Mountain Preserve, and Van Horne Park.
The over 5000 students of Montgomery are served by the Montgomery Township School District. Schools include Orchard Hill Elementary, Village Elementary, Montgomery Lower Middle School, Montgomery Upper Middle school, and Montgomery High School. Montgomery was one of the fastest growing school districts in New Jersey, which tripled in 13 years from 1992 – 2005.
Public transportation is provided by the New Jersey Transit on the 605 route. Princeton Airport is also located in Montgomery Township. The airport is privately owned by Princeton Aero Corp. The airport houses the Raritan Valley Flying School, Princeton Pilot Shop, Pacific Aircraft, Analar Helicopter Charter and Platinum Helicopters.
