Somerville is a borough located in Somerset County, New Jersey. The borough is named after Somerset in England. It became a town in 1863, then a borough in 1909. Somerville was originally settled by the Dutch who had purchased the land. They established their church near what would become Somerville. The community had its roots in farming, but rapidly grew after the railroad was completed in the 1840s and water power was developed in the 1850s.

For dining, there's no shortage of unique places to eat. Savor the flavor at Savor, voted the best outdoor dining in Central New Jersey. Cafe Picasso is also a highly rated restaurant that serves Southern Italian specialties in a rustic venue. They also offer outdoor dining.

There are currently an estimated 12,000 residents who call Somerville home. The climate is warm in the summer with temperatures hovering in the 70s and 80s, making it the ideal place to call home the summer.

The schools in Somerville are governed by Somerville Public Schools. The districts 3 schools have and enrollment of about 2200 students. Those schools include Van Derveer Elementary, Somerville Middle School, and Somerville High School.

Private school alternatives include Immaculate High School, a Roman Catholic high school that serves about 850 students, along with Immaculate Conception School.

Transportation

Somerville's transportation options include a number of freeways, such as US Route 22, which runs along the northern boundary of Somerville and connects to the state highway network. Train service is available at the Somerville Train Station, which serves the New Jersey Transit's Raritan Valley Line. Newark Liberty International Airport offers the closest solution for air travel.
