Metuchen is a borough in Middlesex County which is 8 miles northeast of New Brunswick, 18 miles southwest of Newark, 24 miles southwest of Jersey City, and 29 miles southwest of Manhattan, all part of the New York metropolitan area. As of the 2010 United States Census, the borough's population was 13,574. Located in the heart of central New Jersey, Metuchen captures the spirit of “small town USA.” Also known as “The Brainy Borough” because of the many professionals, artists, educators and literary figures (and now even a former Governor) who lived here, Metuchen developed primarily due to its location and access to key transportation routes.
Shopping and Dining – Metuchenites often get to know their local merchants and get personalized service they find missing at large chain stores in the nearby shopping malls. Menlo Park Mall, located in nearby Edison is a 2-level super regional mall featuring Macy's, Nordstrom, Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Benihana, The Cheesecake Factory, Champps Bar & Restaurant, Romano's Macaroni Grill, IchiUmi Seafood & Sushi Buffet, Rainforest Cafe, Chipotle, AMC Dine-In Theatre and a variety of Specialty Foods in our Food Court. Parks and Recreation – Metuchen’s residents often walk or jog down its tree-lined streets, shop in the quaint Main Street stores, frequent the many playgrounds and parks (Middlesex Greenway, Dismal Swamp, Thomas Pond Park, Centennial Park), and gather at the annual events like parades, the arts & crafts festival and the “country” fair. The Borough of Metuchen Recreation Department sponsors activities and events to enhance the quality of life for Metuchen residents of all ages, whether it is the popular annual events such as our sports camps, parades, classes and clinics or special one-time events. The Metuchen Municipal Pool has program for those members looking to improve their swimming ability, improve their fitness level, meet fellow members interested in swimming, and want to have some fun in the pool. It is designed for members who can swim at least freestyle/crawl and have some experience as at least a lap swimmer.
Living – Aside from its “neighborly” small-town friendliness, Metuchen’s age differentiates it from its more modern suburban neighboring towns. From the Victorian era horse watering trough on Middlesex Avenue to its many charming restored historic homes, Metuchen retains a historic character and timeless stability.
Schools, Health, Transportation – The Metuchen School District serves students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. The district is classified by the New Jersey Department of Education as being in District Factor Group "I", the second highest of eight groupings. The school was the 19th-ranked public high school in New Jersey out of 328 schools statewide in New Jersey Monthly magazine's September 2012 cover story on the state's "Top Public High Schools", The Borough is also home to St. Joseph High School, a private all-boys Catholic prep school, notable for its academics and sports awards. JFK Medical Center located in Edison is about 2 miles away and is a non-profit 498-bed community hospital. With more than 900 affiliated physicians, JFK offers a complete array of advanced services including general and specialized surgery, cardiac care, maternity and pediatric care, and emergency medicine. JFK Medical Center’s Johnson Rehabilitation Institute (JRI) has been ranked as one of the best hospitals in the nation for 2013-14 for Rehabilitation by U.S. News & World Report. The annual U.S. News Best Hospitals rankings, now in their 24th year, recognize hospitals that excel in treating the most challenging patients. Many residents commute daily to New York City. is about 2 miles away.
